Tips for Developing the Whole Child
These simple tips can help you work on many areas of development that will help your child become a well-rounded person. They also help extend your child's learning at home.
Math
Encourage your child to observe objects and to tell how they are the same and different. Begin by comparing and contrasting two objects that are very different from each other. As your child becomes more able to compare and contrast, observe objects that are very similar, but that have small details that make them different.
Literacy and Language Development
Read to your child on a daily basis and about a variety of subjects. Include fiction and nonfiction books and books about your child's favorite topics. Visit the local library with your child and choose books together.
Engage in conversation with your child. Talk about the things he or she is doing and learning at school. Also, talk about all the new experiences he or she is having inside and outside school and home.
Music and Movement
Listen to different types of music with your child, from classical to contemporary. Talk about how the music makes you feel, and add movement activities. Also, encourage your child to learn about different musical instruments. You can make simple musical instruments using a variety of art materials.
